SOUTH Lakes MP Tim Farron and candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Christie will host a virtual ‘town hall meeting’ to discuss rural crime.

The meeting will take place on March 5 via Zoom from 7pm and will give local residents the opportunity to raise their experiences of rural crime and discuss with Tim and Mark what can be done to tackle it.

It comes as a survey from the Countryside Alliance found that over four in 10 (43%) people in Cumbria think that the police don’t take rural crime seriously, while more than half (56%) don’t think rural policing has improved since 2012.

Tim said: “Rural crime is an ever-increasing problem which has devastating effects on people’s livelihoods and mental health. Farmers and agricultural workers should have just as much right to feel safe and have their property protected as people living towns and cities.

"This is a big issue, but we’re only going to tackle it by working together."
