A DRIVER’S lucky escape has prompted calls for motorists to take extra care driving on wet roads.

It follows a dramatic one-vehicle collision on the A590 at Lindale Hill.

A picture shared by South Lakes Police highlighted the significant damage to the driver’s white car.

Fortunately, the driver escaped uninjured, with the police stating that he was “very lucky” to do so.

As a result one lane of the A590 was closed westbound following the accident.

South Lakes Police tweeted: “The road is now clear, however the roads are very wet with blustery wind.

“The driver of this car is very lucky and suffered no injuries.”

It came as the county saw 65 per cent of its expected rainfall for the month in just 24 hours.

Cumbria saw heavy rain and wind on Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to flood risks in some areas.

In Patterdale, there was 115mm of rain, 112mm in Honister Pass, 102mm in Shap, 100mm in Seathwaite and 78mm in Keswick.

A statement from the Environment Agency said: “In the last 24 hours Cumbria has seen 65 per cent of its rainfall for the month. Our teams continue to be out in Cumbria clearing grids.”

Cumbria’s police and crime commissioner Peter McCall has urged all drivers to take care on the county’s roads, especially during the wet weather.

He hopes drivers will learn from yesterday’s incident and be “extra careful” as a result.

He said: “We all need to be extra careful with the adverse conditions at the moment.

“The police constantly put out messages to drivers to take care because we do feel the brunt of the weather, often flooding and people driving through flood water, and obviously people should avoid that.

“It is about taking extra care for the conditions at the time, and at the moment we need to be looking at other hazards too such as potholes which emerge at this time of the year because of frost.

“It is on us all to drive to the conditions and be really aware of them whilst out on the roads.”

Ian Maynard, chairman of Cartmel Parish Council, has issued a similar warning to drivers.

He added: “The whole of the A590 is a very dangerous road and people should take care when driving on it, especially during wet conditions.

“This shouldn’t come as a surprise to drivers as they know how dangerous our roads can be.”
