Nando’s, Greggs and TGI Friday’s have revealed whether they will be moving into the site of a former national retailer after calls from the public.

Topps Tiles in Walney Road shut its doors for the final time last year, with a number of staff members made redundant as a result of the closure.

The home retailer warned in January last year that trading had been impacted by the political and economic uncertainty surrounding the UK general election. The site is currently up for rent, with a number of businesses revealing whether they will take over the Walney Road site.

Readers have shown interest in the eateries Nando’s, Greggs and TGI Fridays potentially moving into the site.

A spokesman for Nando's said the company does not comment on speculation and would not comfirm whether the eatery would be coming to Barrow.

A spokeswoman for Greggs said: “Although we’re always looking at potential locations to open new shops, there are no current plans to open a shop on Walney Road.”

A spokesman for TGI Fridays said: “We don’t currently have plans to open a new restaurant in Barrow. However, Fridays fans across Cumbria can get their fix from home with our DIY meal kits, including our Fridays sesame chicken strips, available with home delivery from Great Food 2 U.”

Topps Tiles opened its first store in 1963 in Sale, Manchester and then continued to open stores across the North West and the Midlands.

In 1990, Topps Tiles merged with Tile Kingdom and consequently expanded its presence into the South and London. Topps Tiles continued to grow following the merger and became a public limited company in 1997.

A spokesperson for Topps Tiles revealed last year that employees affected by the closure would be supported.

He said: “Providing customers with quality products and services is at the heart of our business, which is why we regularly review and optimise our stores and their locations.

“Whilst we are sorry that our Barrow-in-Furness store is closing, customers can still find our stylish range of products and experience the same high quality levels of service and expertise at our Morecambe store.

“Customers can also take advantage of our increasingly popular online ordering service and enhanced delivery services, which now includes the option to have items delivered directly to their door.

“There will be a small number of employees affected by the closure and we are currently in the process of consulting and supporting them through this period.”
