‘Low carbon measures for Barrow's housing stock could happen en masse,’ a council housing boss has said.

Chris Jones, the housing renewal manager at Barrow Borough Council, gave an update to the council's executive committee on the Government’s Green Homes Grants programme.

He said: “A £2bn programme from the Government is aimed at installing low carbon measures like insulation and heat pumps of which £1.5million could come in a borough voucher scheme."

Mr Jones said Barrow, having missed an earlier opportunity to be involved in phase one of the Government scheme, is in a strong position.

He said: “Individual households can apply.

"However, Barrow being in a unique position with its housing stock could apply en masse meaning individuals won’t have to go through the paperwork to get green grants."

Councillors were told Eden District Council will act as the accountable body for Cumbria to secure funding for district authorities in the county in the second phase of the scheme.
