A DEGREE apprentice at BAE Systems Submarines in Barrow has won a major national award.

Adam Houlden, 31, won the Business Apprentice Rising Star category at the Make UK Manufacturing Awards.

With National Apprenticeship Week next week from February 8 to 14, and with BAE Systems’ recruitment window open until February 28, Adam’s story is a great example of how people can forge fulfilling careers in the submarines business.

The Information Management and Technology (IM&T) Higher Apprentice said: “I’m really pleased I began a career at BAE Systems – I only wish I’d done it sooner.

“I’ve worked in a few jobs since leaving school, including a call centre, but I’d had a taste of working in IT and I liked it so when the apprenticeship came up I went for it.

“I’m pleased I did, I’ve enjoyed the various placements and, because of the stability the job offers, my wife and I have been able to start a family.”

Adam’s wife Lois also works for BAE Systems. The couple’s daughter, Luna, will turn three in March.

Adam said: “I’ve been able to go through a degree at the same time as starting a family, I feel I’ve had some excellent support.

“I still don’t know who nominated me for the Make UK Award, they don’t tell you. But winning it reflects well on the teams I have joined for my placements.”

Manufacturers’ organisation Make UK aims to stimulate success for manufacturing businesses, helping them to meet their objectives and goals. It seeks to empower individuals and inspire the next generation of manufacturers, people like Adam.

Now coming to the end of his apprenticeship, he is able to reflect on what he’s achieved.

“It’s been an advantage being a little older,” he said.

“When you’re 18 you maybe don’t grasp just what an opportunity it is.

“But this September I’ll be exiting into a job that I really enjoy.”

BAE Systems is currently hiring more than 1,250 new trainees into its early careers programmes in 2021.

More than 850 apprenticeships and 400 graduate roles are available across the UK.
