A LUCKY window maker scooped almost £120,000 on the lottery after he dashed to his local shop to buy carrots.

Martin Gilbey, 50, and his partner Tracy Priest, 46, were making a Sunday roast when they discovered they were out of the veg.

Window maker Martin went to his local Londis to buy a 60p bunch of carrots but the shop assistant said there was a minium £3 limit for bank card purchases.

So Martin bought a £2.50 EuroMillions lucky dip and was stunned when he matched 5 numbers and one Lucky Star on the draw on January 8.

His winning numbers were 18, 23, 37, 41, 42, and the Lucky Star was 6.

Incredibly, the huge Elvis fan scooped the £119,151.70p on The King’s birthday.

Martin, who lives with partner Tracy Priest, 46, in Northampton, said: “Like for many families January can be a tough month financially.

“After all the Christmas bills had been paid, I checked my account and noticed there wasn’t much left to live on.

“Tracy and I said we still must have a Sunday roast that weekend and after checking the fridge, thankfully all we were missing was some vegetables, so there and then I decided to pop out to buy some carrots.

“I got to the till but only had my debit card and the minimum purchase with a card was £3.

“I said to the lady at the counter, ‘shall I buy a Scratchcard or a Lottery ticket’.

“She said Lottery so I had a Lucky Dip for that night’s EuroMillions draw to take me over £3.

“I got home, and to be honest forgot about the ticket and then after Tracy had gone to bed, I remembered and decided to check my numbers.

“I scanned it using my National Lottery App and couldn’t believe what I saw.

“I checked it again. I then deleted the app, downloaded it again and re-scanned the ticket.

“At this point I was starting to get a bit hot under the collar, so I called Tracy to come downstairs to help.

“She cried out, ‘I’m not coming downstairs for a tenner’ but eventually looked at the ticket when she realised something was going on.

“We both checked it again and after many more scans of the ticket we started to cry, cuddle and jump about.”

Martin’s win comes after a tough year which saw him need to get a new job and lose his mother.

He broke the news of his win to his three bothers and sister on a Zoom call.
