A South African and Geordie couple are behind Millom’s newest addition to the food community.

Jay and Leah Swart have recently opened up Go Bananas BBQ in the town, as they look to provide residents with quality, gourmet street food.

Opening on January 9, Go Bananas BBQ is currently providing a takeaway service from a trailer in the car park on Millom’s Lancashire Road.

Co-owner Jay, from the Free State, has revealed how the business run with Leah, from Newcastle, has been greeted by the local community.

“It’s been going brilliantly, the Millom community has been amazing with us,” Jay said.

“We are overwhelmed with all the support that we are getting at the moment.

“We are getting loads and loads of good feedback on the food.”

Selling gourmet street food, Go Bananas BBQ’s menu ranges from burgers and lamb chops to Greek-style BBQ chicken and will also run daily specials.

Having already run restaurants in Thailand and South Africa, Jay believes the business will fill a gap in the Millom market.

Jay added: “It’s been a long time coming.

“We saw a gap in the market.

“Whenever I went to Millom and tried to find a decent, hot meal – I just couldn’t find one.

“So, we’ve decided to fill that gap and do hot lunches and go into the dinner market, and ensure that our food is an amazing quality for our customers.

“For the time being we are going to stick with the trailer and we will see what support we get, but we will definitely look at opening premises if it is warranted.”

Following their opening in Millom, Jay revealed that they are now planning to open a trailer in Grizebeck too.

Although it is just a takeaway service currently, Jay is planning to offer delivered food in the near future.
