Cricketers in Cumbria are taking on a 5,000-mile challenge this month - to raise money for two good causes.

Players and fans from across the county will between them walk, run, cycle or swim 5,608 miles.

That is the distance from Cumbria to the Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka.

They are aiming to complete the long-distance challenge in time for day five of the Second Test between Sri Lanka and England at the stadium on Tuesday, January 26.

Cumbria Cricket say they hope to raise £1 for every mile. They will then split the money raised in the crowdfunding challenge between the Cumbria Cricket Programme, which supports talented young cricketers, and Cumbria Community Foundation, which aims to address disadvantage in the county by making life-changing grants and promoting philanthropy.

Those taking on the challenge are asked to log their individual miles in a dedicated group on the Strava app, until the total collected miles reaches 5,608.

All participants have been asked to ensure that, when in taking part in the challenge, they are adhering to lockdown rules.

Boys’ Talent Lead at Cumbria Cricket, Paul Hindmarch, said: “It’s been a really tough year for grassroots sport.

“Unfortunately, our winter programme has come to a standstill.

“Launching the ‘Race to Galle’ challenge is our way of keeping everyone active and connected during this period, whilst raising money for two very important causes.

“We want as many young Cricketers, family members and supporters as possible to get involved to help us smash our target.”
