A pampered Cumbrian pooch will be starring in a new BBC series searching for Britain's best dog groomer.

Ogo, a three-year-old miniature poodle, revelled in the attention he received on the set of Pooch Perfect, debuting this Thursday at 8pm.

The young Ogo is no stranger to the spotlight, having made an appearance as a model demonstration dog at Crufts in March.

The BBC series will see 16 professional dog groomers battle it out to be crowned the nation’s top dog groomer and win the Golden Stanley trophy – Stanley being the stage name of rescue dog Ponti, who will be keeping presenter Sheridan Smith OBE company on screen.

In each heat, four groomers will face a surprise breed makeover challenge in which they will be tasked with grooming the same breed of dog to breed standard.

As the series goes on the challenges will become increasingly intricate by introducing new techniques – even using temporary colour for some of the pampered pooches.

Ogo's delighted owner, Sandra Gibson, 55, who lives near Newby Bridge, said: "They were asking on Facebook for any dogs that might be suitable – and we have three dogs so we sent pictures in and they got in touch and said they wanted more on Ogo, our brown miniature poodle.

"We sent endless photographs and videos because they were unable to meet them in person."

Mrs Gibson's own talents were put to use in the lead up to the show, thanks to her experience as owner of Shampooch at StudioK9 in Bowness.

She said: "After he was selected he had to be groomed at a professional groomers each week, which helps, because that's what I do.

"We took him down to Media City in Manchester in early August, and he spent from 7.30am to 6pm at the television studio.

"He was very spoilt – there was so many staff looking after them it was unbelievable.

"At the end of the day when myself and my husband and the other owners went back they did a catwalk for the dogs where they revealed the grooms, and then they interviewed us – but how much we're on the show we don't know!

"But Ogo loved doing it, probably because he got more spoilt than what he already is."
