Three stores in Barrow have issued urgent recalls on a food product over fears they could make shoppers ill.

Tesco, in Walney Road, and the supermarket's two other stores in Rawlinson Street and Flass Lane, are urging customers not to eat its own brand 16 spicy chorizo slices and instead return them to where they bought them from.

The product has been pulled from shelves across the stores after they were found to contain Listeria monocytogenes.

If contaminated food is eaten, listeria can cause listeriosis, which causes flu-like symptoms such as high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

In extreme cases, it can also cause life-threatening illnesses including sepsis, meningitis and encephalitis.

Some people are more at risk of listeria infections, such as those over 65, pregnant women, babies younger than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

A statement on the recall notice from Tesco apologised for any inconvenience caused.

It said: "Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.

"If you require further details, please contact Customer Services directly."
