A POPULAR pub is closing its doors today.

The Bear on the Square, on St George’s Square in Millom has not yet set a reopening date, stating that it will be closed until further notice.

In an announcement to the public this weekend, the pub's management claimed that it would not be viable to remain open during the current coronavirus restrictions.

It said: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you all that the Bear will be closing on Monday December 14 until further notice.

“It is a decision we have not taken lightly, but it is not viable for us to remain open unless we drop to tier one.”

The area is currently in Tier 2, with Copeland having 22 cases in the last seven days, at a rate of 32.3 per 100,000 population.

This is much lower than England in general, which stands at 160.9 cases per 100,000 population over the last seven days.

Throughout the entirety of the pandemic, Copeland has seen 1,218 cases, or 1,786.4 cases per 100,000 population.
