A Barrow Borough Councillor has pledged his support for the Henry Reeves International Medical Brigades.

Cllr Iain Mooney, lead member for health and well-being for the council, is now backing the group for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Specifically, the Parkside councillor believes that the prize should be awarded to the Cuban health workers who form the Henry Reeves International Medical Brigades.

Cllr Mooney explained: “Since April, more than 3,700 Cuban doctors, nurses and technicians have volunteered alongside health workers in 39 countries to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They are members of Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade which has saved more than 80,000 lives worldwide since its formation in 2005.

“In April this year, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab publicly thanked Cuba for this assistance in a statement to the UK parliament.

“Cuba has also offered its anti-viral drug Interferon alfa-2b available to nations around the world to help in the treatment of patients infected with COVID-19.”
