BARROW MP Simon Fell has joined industry leaders in celebrating the success of the UK’s wind energy industry’s role in tackling climate change.

As part of ‘UK Wind Week’ the annual celebration of the sector was held.

Simon said: “The Government’s new ten-point green plan is great news not only for our environment but for Barrow and Furness.

“We are ideally placed in Furness to contribute to the ten-point plan with offshore wind and new nuclear. Added to that, there’s a huge appetite locally for investment into active travel.

“The Prime Minister’s recent announcements present savings for every household in Furness and for job opportunities for hundreds of people in our area.

“This UK Wind Week I want to pay tribute to our offshore industry here. I’ll continue to make the case across Government for the Furness coastline to be the Offshore Wind power generator capital of the UK.”

Hugh McNeal, CEO of RenewableUK, the renewable energy trade association, said: “Wind power will be vital for the UK to deliver our net zero carbon emissions target.

“A future energy system powered by renewable energy will also provide thousands of jobs and drive down energy bills.

“The offshore, onshore, and floating wind industry is now at the heart of Governments green economic recovery plans. This year, Government declared a target of 40GW of offshore wind by 2030, 1GW of floating wind and, announced earlier in the year, new CfD auctions of onshore wind.”

The week’s celebrations follow a speech from the Prime Minister earlier this month in which he announced an ambition to make the UK “The Saudi Arabia of wind”.

The Government hope that their target of developing 40GW of offshore wind by 2030.
