EMERGENCY services were called out in the early hours of the morning to attend to a young woman in distress.

Cumbria Police were called at 3am to the report of a concern for welfare at Jubilee Bridge, Walney.

Furness Coastguard were among those who attended the scene after they were called at 3.38am to assist Cumbria Police with the incident.

The police officers who attended to the scene were on the bridge for around one hour before the woman was eventually brought to safety in a cross-service effort.

Also in attendance was Barrow Lifeboat, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service.

Fire chief Roger Exley said: "A female was in a dangerous position on the bridge and threatening to jump off.

"We have had a similar incident prior to this with the same person.

"Our firefighters alongside police and the coastguard worked together to bring her to safety."

A single ambulance from the North West Ambulance Service arrived to the scene at 3.40am, just three minutes after they had received the call requesting their assistance.

The girl, who is in her late teens, was left in the care of the medical professionals.

She was eventually taken to Furness General Hospital by ambulance.

It is not known if she had suffered any injuries.

A spokesperson for Furness Coastguard said: "A successful outcome to what was challenging circumstances."
