FINES for all those who have breached lockdown restrictions in Barrow and South Lakeland has been deemed ‘only right’ by MP Tim Farron.

A total of £3,637 in fines was imposed on the nine people who were found to be breaching lockdown restrictions by Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

Seven of the nine charged had travelled to Cumbria from outside the county from Manchester, Liverpool, Morecambe, and Blackpool.

The most popular spot where people were caught was Coniston, the other locations were Ambleside, Windermere, and Kendal.

Tim Farron, South Lakes MP, said: “When so many people have made such huge sacrifices during this crisis, it is only right that there are consequences for the very tiny minority who break the rules.

“Over the first lockdown we saw many instances of people coming to the Lakes and not only breaking the COVID rules, but also the Countryside Code too through littering, damage to wildlife and anti-social behaviour.

“That’s why I’m not only pushing for more resources for our overstretch local police force, but also for the Countryside Code to be taught in schools so our young people can be brought up learning to respect and love the countryside.”
