FAST food lovers could be indulging on burgers sooner than they think as work progresses on a new restaurant.

Construction work is well under way on transforming the former Frankie and Benny’s building in Barrow’s Hindpool Retail Park into a new branch of Burger King.

Workers began renovating the site earlier this month nearly a year after members of Barrow Council's planning committee gave the green light for the new restaurant.

The building - which has lied empty for a number of years - has been cleared to allow for the new restaurant and the outside is being modified to allow for new signage.

The unit is being partially demolished to allow for the new drive-thru, while the restaurant will feature an outdoor seating area.

A new pedestrian entrance will also be created and the existing service entry, to the left of the restaurant, will be retained. A meeting of Barrow Council’s planning committee was told the new outlet would bring 15 full-time jobs to the town and 25 in total.

The proposals were amended after concerns were raised by highways bosses from Cumbria County Council the new drive-thru would lead to significant congestion in the area.

But objections were withdrawn after changes to the plans, which included lengthening the drive-thru queuing area and painting £5,000 ‘keep clear’ marking on the adjacent Hindpool Road, were put forward.

Plans revealed in May said Burger King was working alongside Cumbria County Council to ease traffic fears around its new drive-thru. The unit had originally been earmarked to be split between Greggs and Card Factory before Burger King showed interest in the site.

Burger King has not yet revealed an opening date.
