Cumbria Police has warned the public to be on their guard against fraudsters who pretend to be from trusted organisations.

A force spokesman said online:"Beware of fraudsters impersonating staff from trusted organisations.

"This could include a bank, a utility company, or a government department."

The police gave advice on how members of the public can protect themselves from falling victim to fraudsters' schemes.

*Stop: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.

*Challenge: Could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

*Protect: Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud you can report to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040.

Or you can report online on the Action Fraud website at www.actionfraud.police.uk .
