Plans for Remembrance Sunday this year have been forced to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic across South Cumbria.

Residents are being encouraged to mark Remembrance Sunday, which takes place on November 8, from their homes this year due to coronavirus restrictions.

The annual event remembers those who have given their lives for the country – but for the first time in its 100-year history, members of the public will be barred from the Cenotaph wreath-laying, while community Royal British Legion parades throughout the UK have been cancelled.

Barrow's Remembrance Day commemoration will include a private wreath laying at the Cenotaph in Barrow Park on Sunday, November 8.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic and high risk restrictions means the usual parade has had to be paused this year in a bid to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.

The wreath laying and two minute's silence will, however, be streamed on Barrow Borough Council's YouTube channel on the day and residents are encouraged to watch and observe the silence from their doorstep.

Ulverston Town Council has also cancelled its parade and is respectfully requesting the community who normally pay their respects stay at home this year or lay wreaths and crosses throughout the day.

Ulverston Parish Church will still hold a Remembrance Service on Sunday November 8 at 2.30pm. Anyone wishing to attend should contact the Parish Church Office on 01229 588081 as places will be limited to ensure social distancing.

Chair of the Royal British Legion, Ulverston branch, Cllr Norman Bishop Rowe said: “We realise that these constraints will cause disappointment for many but Remembrance this year will be just as important.”

Askam and Ireleth Parish Council has also announced its Remembrance Sunday parade, service and wreath laying ceremony will not go ahead in the Memorial Garden.

In order to mark the occasion, the chairman of the parish council will lay a wreath on behalf of the community and ask the community to observe the silence at 11am on their own doorstep.

Millom Town Council has followed suit and announced the cancellation of its annual parade. However there will be a wreath laying ceremony on Wednesday November 11 which will take place throughout the day. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath may do so as long as people remember to adhere to social distancing rules.
