PLANS have been submitted to install a number of signs for a new DFS store coming to Barrow.

An application has been put forward to Barrow Borough Council to put up nine new signs - six illuminated and three non-illuminated - at the soon-to-be-opened DFS store in Hindpool Retail Park.

Construction work is still underway to convert the former Aldi supermarket into a furniture shop.

Work began in June.

The Mail revealed in October last year that DFS was advertising job vacancies for a store manager on its online careers website.

A planning application, submitted by the owner of the retail park, British Land last year, revealed that DFS required the entrance lobby to be removed and for the store’s glazing to be replaced.

The plans reveal the alterations to the exterior of the unit will also create three more parking spaces.

Documents submitted with the application, from chartered surveyors Montagu Evans, stated the ‘minor proposed alterations’ would ‘allow the unit to be reoccupied’.

The submitted application states: “The proposed development is minor in its nature and will allow the unit to be re-occupied.

“The proposed development will therefore result in material socio-economic benefits providing local employment opportunities.”

The application was approved in December for the minor changes to convert the store into DFS.

DFS has not revealed a completion or opening date for the new store.

The nearest DFS stores are currently in Carlisle, Preston and Bolton.

The company’s origins date back to 1969 when 24-year-old Graham Kirkham launched the firm above a snooker hall under the name Northern Upholstery.

The company continued to grow and in 1993 had an estimated value of £271m when it was floated on the stock market.
