Every home in the country will be powered by offshore wind within 10 years, Boris Johnson told the Conservative conference yesterday as he pledges a green industrial revolution that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Barrow MP Simon Fell wants to use this as an opportunity to boost the assets Furness already has with Orsted Offshore Windfarm already boasting one of the largest number of turbines in the UK just off the Walney coast.

Simon Fell, MP for Barrow, said: "This is a huge opportunity for Barrow – the next round of auctions will cement us as having the largest provision of offshore wind in the world, but now we have the opportunity to go even further. I'm looking forward to working with Ministers over the next few months on this."

The Prime Minister has said the coronavirus crisis should be used as a catalyst to make the UK a world leader in clean power generation.

The wind power plan will see £160 million made available to upgrade ports and infrastructure across areas like Teesside and Humber in northern England, Scotland and Wales as the next generation of turbines are built.

Mr Johnson said the UK Government has decided to become the world leader in low cost clean power generation – cheaper than coal and gas – and believes that in 10 years’ time offshore wind will be powering every home in the country.

Duncan Clark, Head of UK Region for Ørsted said: “We welcome today’s announcement from the government which will underpin the delivery of at least 40GW of offshore wind by 2030 and unlock huge opportunities for world class UK supply chain companies, both domestically and overseas, to market the skills and innovative technologies that have been fostered in the UK offshore wind industry.

“Offshore wind is the most cost effective way to achieve the UK’s net zero ambitions and delivering 40 GW of offshore wind by 2030 is an essential part of this roadmap.

“This is a challenging target but achievable if Government and the industry continue to work together to accelerate deployment and build out the UK project pipeline as quickly as possible, regenerating coastal communities while expediting our progress to a more sustainable, low-carbon future.”
