THIS Grange based pub has been a mainstay for a long time, but is now under new management who wants to steer the team to success.

The Commodore has it all according to landlord Robert Grimshaw, from a beer garden and brilliant food, to darts and pool.

Charlotte Hargen has recently come into the post of area manager and has described how it has been difficult to arrive so recently after the first wave of coronavirus.

"Coming in as the manager of a very successful and busy pub straight out of lockdown has been hard," she said.

"We didn’t have the additional summer staff in place ready for The Eat Out To Help out the scheme as no one knew whether people would hurry back to the pubs.

"The unpredictability of it all has been tough.

"The customer interaction is one of the best things about running a pub, especially after lockdown when families are first getting together after weeks of not seeing each other.

"Being able to play a big role in hosting the reunions and ensuring it is a memorable occasion is really special.

"At the moment it’s very tough trying to ensure people to adhere to Covid guidelines without coming across as inhospitable."

The Lakeland Inns pub, located on the edge of the lake district, overlooking Morecambe bay, is probably the oldest hostelry in Grange-over-Sands having been built in the 1730s.

Prior to improvements made to the roads and the arrival of the railway the main access was across the dangerous sands of Morecambe Bay.

The first port of call for many travellers who came across the sands and were seeking rest and good food was at The Commodore Inn. And, almost 300 years on, nothing has changed.

They serve traditional pub food with a twist, sourced locally from in and around the Lakes.

The menu is updated regularly offering fresh seasonal produce.

From their classic homemade fishcake or homemade chicken liver and cognac pate for starters to our butterfly chicken breast served on colcannon mash with a leek and pancetta cream sauce to our popular roasted lamb rump for main course, the choices are endless.

Their happy customers can also choose to opt for one of the popular gourmet burgers.

"Our Christmas Dinner Of The Year Charity Challenge," Ms Hargen said.

"We produced a whopping 2lb 'pig in blanket' which was served on top of a giant 12-inch Yorkshire pudding piled high with a full Christmas dinner. "

With Christmas just around the corner who could resist something like that.

The Commodore commands magnificent views over Morecambe Bay and serves food which customers can enjoy on the terrace. It is one of three pubs run by Lakeland Inns, and managing director Kirsty Ridge would be more than happy to accommodate customers at Broughton's The Black Cock Inn, The Royal Oak at Spark Bridge, and Ulverston's The Sun Inn.
