Ulverston Leisure Centre has been given a lifeline by the town council.
The centre, which is owned by South Lakeland District Council and run privately by Greenwich Leisure Limited, approached Ulverston Town council for money to help improve its swimming pool facilities.
It pledged to give £30,000 but Cllr David Webster said he was cautious as to how the centre would be funded in the future given the uncertainty around how councils could look.
"Next year we have elections and I do not want to saddle a future cabinet with an ongoing bill when we don’t know yet who will be responsible for it, especially if we get a single unitary authority for the county," he said.
The money has been set aside and will be part of a set of contributions from town and district councils along with a private donation from pharmaceutical business GlaxoSmithKline.
