A HEARTBREAKING story of a blind Jack Russell that was found tied up outside a coffee shop in Ulverston has come to a happy conclusion - with the pet being given to new owners.

A number of posts were put up online this week about a dog being tied up outside Costa Coffee in Ulverston.

The dog's owner was an elderly lady, who, according to online reports, had been suffering from a medical condition and was distressed in the street.

She was assisted two passers by, and it was discovered that she was unable to take care of the dog, and had no where to take it.

The passers by assisted the woman and thanks to the Barrow in Furness lost and found online pets group, the dog was taken to a new home.

Norma Powell, the admin for the group that helped to re-home the 17 year old dog, explained that original posts suggesting the dog had been abandoned by a man are untrue.

Miss Powell explained the situation and that the group was concerned for the well being of the woman.

She added that group members are happy the dog now has new home and a resolution could be found.

She explained: “The original post wasn’t correct. It was actually an elderly lady who owned the dog and she did not abandon it.

“It is believed she was suffering both physically and emotionally and therefore was unable to take care of the Jack Russell.

“As the dog was approximately 17 years old and blind, it is understandable that a person in that condition would have great difficulty in caring for it.

“The two ladies who assisted the elderly woman later took the dog to a new home after the owner explained that she had been unable to gain help from the RSPCA. “The dog was also taken to the vets for a full medical check-up.

“Naturally, our members on our group were very upset by this and it is very rare things like this happen. We are glad that a resolution could be found so that the owner and the pet were taken care of.

“The wellbeing of the owner was of great concern to us.

“In our group we try and notify people in the area of any lost pets and often we are able to return them to their owners. I am very proud of our members and the work they do. We will keep them updated on these situations as they unfold."

She added a situation like this one is rare.

She added: "We normally have a lot of cats lost, but rarely situations like this. “We are glad that this particular story reached a satisfactory conclusion. But it is still very sad that it happened.”
