With the colder nights settling in and the leaves turning that calming shade of caramel, now seems the perfect time to look back on a top autumnal country show.

The Wasdale Head Show and Shepherd’s Meet has been taking place for more than a century, with farmers, locals and country-lovers coming together to mark the end of the farming season.

With a dash of competition and a healthy dose of crisp air, the show typically takes place in early October.

And while the 2020 show has been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic, 2012 saw plenty of action.

Including everything from fell running and sheep-judging to combine exhibitions and dog parades, the show really does have everything a fan of the countryside could ever want.

For those feeling particularly revved up and ready to go, the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling competition is on offer, with contestants taking each other out one by one to be named the strongest in the valley.

The ever-popular fell running proves a success every year, with 2012 being no different.

A sea of avid joggers could be seen hurtling over fences and stone walls, climbing the fells at the speed of light and rocketing towards the finish line – but eight years ago, Alistair Dunn outshone them all and took home the trophy.

But the competitions don't end there.

Vintage classes, including tractors, agricultural machinery, stationary engines, cars and motorbikes, are also on offer to all to take part in, and youngsters have always fancied a climb on-board to test their driving skills.

Contestants can also put themselves in for Best Beard and Best Shepherd's Boots, as visitors meander round the trade stalls, watch over the sheep sheering exhibition, look on as the top shepherd's crook is judged, and take in the beauty of Wasdale Head Valley.

Almost a decade has passed since this not-too-drizzly show day, and while this year's get-together will be sorely missed, we can always look back on fond memories, and look forward to the next good, old fashioned Shepherd's Meet when we can come together once again.
