A RESIDENT has hit out parents blocking access to their driveway when picking up pupils.

They said they were faced with a 'nightmare' situation when parents parked up to collect pupils from St Bernard's Catholic Primary School in Barrow's Rating Lane.

The resident said cars had blocked their driveway at crucial times and warned that emergency services could struggle to reach houses in the area.

They said: "It has been an absolute nightmare, parents have been parking from 2.40pm to pick children up at 3.15pm, parking on both sides of the road on double yellow lines, across our driveway and twice this week actually on our drive behind our car making it impossible for us to get off the drive.

"It has always been a problem but seems to be escalating and no one willing to do anything until something bad happens

"There is no crossing and with cars parked as they are the children are trying to dash in between them.

"If an ambulance or fire engine needed to get through it would be impossible as the road ends up at a complete standstill."

Cumbria Police has worked with Cumbria County Council in the past to make sure parents were not parking illegally on the road.

Sections of Rating Lane have zig-zag lines warning motorists off parking near schools to allow children to cross safely.

Officers have joined traffic officers in patrolling the road for illegal parking.
