20 wasn’t plenty enough for Ulverton Town Council.

The new temporary 20mph limits will apply to town centre roads in Kendal, Ulverston, Ambleside, Windermere, Bowness and Kirkby Lonsdale.

However, a group of Ulverston Town Councillors are proposing that the new limit go further and be extended to Brewery Street, Fountain Street and Southgate.

Councillors Webster, Wilson and Airey says it should be extended and that the extra cost of the application to Cumbria County Council will be of benefit to the town.

The town council has agreed to spend £1,500 on the application to extend the 20 miles an hour limit to the 3 streets in order to create an extra boundary for pedestrians and road users.

Councillor David Webster from Ulverston town council says it’s not a moment too soon, “We have been trying for a 20mph limit for may a year. The virus has come and now with the cooperation of Cumbria County Council, we have been able to bring it in; all be it for the short term, but an area around the town centre will be in place for the new limit and as well as that it will reduce emissions to the environment thanks to the lower speeds.”

Cllr Wilson has a longer-term view saying, “the battle is to make cars and noxious gases a thing of the past has begun. 20mph in a partnership way with Cumbria County Council has worked, it meets public demand for health and well being. I hope Cumbria County Council will be able to do more in the future with Swarthmoor roundabout from the A590 and redesign aspects of cycling through to Ulverton town.”

Resident Judy Filmore wants to see things go further still, with complete pedestrianisation and beautification of Ulverston town centre saying, ” pedestrianisation of Ulverston will have a positive effect on Peoples’ health, as shops get passing air pollution from passing cars which are breathed in all day long. If and when pedestrianisation is implemented it will give us a chance for additional planting areas and landscaping and beautify the town centre.” Judy Filmore also wants the town council to undergo a survey to get public views.

It is intended the 20mph limit will come into force for the affected roads in Kendal and Ulverston from 29 September 2020, with Ambleside, Windermere, Bowness and Kirkby Lonsdale a week later from 6 October 2020.
