A violent ex injured a woman’s wrist with a barbell and hurt her new partner’s back during a drunken rage outside her home in Dalton.

Darren Rose, 39, separated from his partner in January 2020 and “was not handling the break-up well”, Preston Crown Court heard.

During lockdown, his drinking had escalated and on May 9, Rose made threats to his ex and her new partner that he was going round to the house.

They should “be prepared”, he warned. At 8:30pm, Rose arrived in a taxi and burst through the front door.

His ex’s new partner wrestled him into a headlock and the pair grappled in the living room.

Rose left the house, but warned his rival, “you’re a dead man walking.” A short while later he returned to the house, brandishing a heavy barbell at the man.

His ex stepped between them, but as Rose brought the weight down, she put her hand up to protect herself and was struck to her wrist. Rose then flung the barbell at the man, hitting his back and causing a bruise.

The woman went to hospital for an x-ray which showed her wrist was not broken, however she had to have a slab to support it as she had suffered soft tissue damage.

Rose pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and common assault.

The court heard since the incident, Rose has moved away from the area and now lives in Solihull.

Judge David Potter, sentencing, said: “Since that initial temper I am satisfied you have reflected upon your behaviour and are full of remorse for the uncharacteristic way you acted when you were drunk on May 9.

“This was a one-off incident at a time of high stress for you. You have shown efforts to put this behind you and you have removed yourself from the area

“I am satisfied there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation for you.

“You have come extremely close to going into immediate custody.”

He sentenced Rose, formerly of Harrison Street, to 10 months suspended for two years and ordered him to undertake 25 days of rehabilitation activities. He also made a four month curfew from 7pm to 7am.
