THE MAIL reported that a popular working men’s club was set for bulldozing in Barrow on Monday, August 8, 2011.
Barrow Borough Council had received consent to demolish the former Travellers Rest building in Abbey Road
The council did not require planning permission to knock down the building, however, did require a special consent order to remove it.
This consent has now been granted, with the Ancient Monuments Society, the Council For British Archaeology and county archaeologist Jeremy Parsons all consulted on the plans.
The council has started it wants to remove the building as it does not fit in with the surrounding area. As part of the plans, the former Furness Catholic Amateur Boxing Club gym, which is underneath the building, will be backfilled. Plans submitted as part of the application reveal part of the site could be used as a car park once work is complete.
Steve Solsby, assistant director of regeneration at the council, said: “We haven’t got planning permission to convert any of it into a car park yet, and what we are looking at is landscaping it. We have got some work to do to the existing adjoining building (102 Abbey Road) that we would like to do before demolishing the building, so it will still be about a month before we do it.
