The Met Office is warning of possible thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday, across Cumbria and beyond.

The weather monitoring authority has put in place a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms this coming Monday and Tuesday, for the entirety of the UK.

The Met Office said this morning: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms early next week - but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing."

This warning is in place from midnight on Monday up until midnight on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail."

The authority also warned of possible delays to some public transport services as a result of potential flooding or lightning strikes.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents," the spokesman added

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

A warning was also made over a small chance fast flowing or deep floodwater could cause "danger to life."

Areas of thunderstorms are increasingly likely to develop over the south of the UK or nearby continent late in the weekend or early next week, and will generally track north or north-westwards, the Met Office has said.

Where storms occur, rainfall totals of 30-40 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving 60-80 mm in 3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated.
