Did you hear the story about Daisy, the St Bernard dog which had to be carried down off the fells by the brave and selfless volunteers of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue team? Could you write a poem about it?
The Rotary Club of Whitehaven is sponsoring a poetry competition to raise funds for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue, and offering a first prize of £50 for the best entry and a runner-up prize of £25.
Anthony Payne and John Kennedy, two of the three joint Presidents during this Rotary year, said: “It seemed to us that this event, which even made the national TV news, was so remarkable that it deserves to be immortalised in verse!”
To take part, write a poem of not more than 20 lines and send it to “Daisy Poem”, c/o 83A Main Street, St Bees CA27 0AD, together with a donation of at least £5 as a cheque payable to Wasdale Mountain Rescue by the deadline of August 31.
Your poem can be amusing or serious, and in any form: the prizes will be awarded to the poems which, in the opinion of the judges, are the most original and best describe the work of the Mountain Rescue team.
