They often come into their own for people who work in town centres or are on the go. Here are some of the best places to pick up a sarnie...
1. Greggs, everywhere
There was one Mail reporter (who will remain nameless) who was in mourning when Greggs were forced to close their doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, but they’re now back as a go-to destination for a quick lunch.
With two shops on Dalton Road, Barrow and further stores on the respective market Streets of Dalton and Ulverston, you’re never far away in Furness from one of their delicious baguettes or wraps.
2. Grange Bakery, Ulverston
They’ve been back open in Ulverston Market Hall for almost a month now and their freshly made sandwiches remain as popular as ever with shoppers, as do their freshly-baked bread, pies and cakes, that are made every day on the premises.
3. Thomas’s Bakery, Barrow and Ulverston
They delivered during lockdown via Ulverston Eats, but their fresh sandwiches can now be bought on the premises in both their shops on Cavendish Street, Barrow and Market Street, Ulverston.
This is another place where pies are also extremely popular if you fancy a warmer lunch.
4. Deli.sh, Barrow
Based on Crellin Street on the edge of the town centre, Deli.sh offer sandwiches that go beyond your standard fillings, fit all tastes and can also be made into wraps.
They also offer mouth-watering breakfast baps that get your day off to the perfect start and philly cheesesteak sub rolls as part of their outside catering service.
5. Subway, various
They moved into larger premises on Dalton Road in Barrow last year, which worked out for the best even before social-distancing was brought in.
Like Greggs, you’re never far from a Subway and the choices are almost endless for customers.
6. M&S Food, Ulverston
Marks and Spencer was a popular suggestion, but sadly for the people of Barrow they now need to head to Ulverston, and the new store at the Beehive Retail Park.
It just feels as though a bit more effort has gone into sourcing quality ingredients than some other chain stores, which is why it will be so missed on Dalton Road.
7. Taste of Cumbria, Ulverston
Another choice for anyone wondering around Market Street. Taste of Cumbria prides itself on its homemade and healthy food.
You’d defy anyone to look at the sweet chilli and grilled chicken tortilla wrap featured on their Facebook page this week and not feel hungry.
8. The Bake House, Millom
There’s still some choice in Millom as well and this bakery on St George’s Terrace produce their own pies, sandwiches and cakes, as well as a breakfast menu.
