The Ormsgill Residents Association always sure they did what was best for their community and The Mail was often on hand to bring attention to how they went about this.

In 1995, members feared the Ormsgill Playing Fields on Schneider Road were under threat, as a neighbouring gypsy caravan park had sought permission for a new access road across the site.

The Mail:

The group were worried if one part of the field was sold off by the local Playing Fields Association then the rest could follow and chairman Jim Hamezeian and playing fields spokesman Jeff Wadsworth staged a mini demonstration during a visit by Barrow Borough Council chiefs.

At the start of that year, The Mail highlighted how the Association had recently started Barrow's first-ever food co-operative.

The Mail:

They had occupied the old co-op building and every Friday morning, a group of volunteers would make up that week's order of fruit and vegetables, which could be picked up or delivered.

The Association was about pleasure as well as business, though, and in 1997 they organised a fun day at the Community Centre with the aim of raising funds for a new kids' adventure playground.

The Mail:

The day boosted their coffers to the tune of £1,000, which added to the £600 already raised.

They would also organise coach trips for families, which included one to the Camelot theme park, near Charnock Richard, in 1992 while two busloads ferried children and parents to Parkhouse Farm three years later.
