A YOUNG man in Cumbria is following his lifelong ambition to honour the memory of his hero grandfather.

Richard Brown, 25, a former student of the University of Cumbria, completed an incredibly gruelling weeklong challenge on Sunday.

He aimed to take on the incredible feat of swimming the length of eleven stretches of water in the Lakes to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

Richard’s challenge was part of a lifelong mission he has set for himself to raise money for a huge charity event on behalf of his grandfather’s memory.

His Grandfather, Peter Collins, served in the Parachute Regiment during World War Two.

Richard said: “During the week it was horrible, really tough, but now I’ve finished I’m knackered, but it was definitely worth it.

“Although I think that this challenge is probably both the beginning and end of my open water swimming career!

“I’m also incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me throughout the challenge.

"This, and thinking about what my two Grandads went through, is what really kept me going.”

The fundraiser generated more than £700 for Help for Heroes, and NHS charities.

Richard received overwhelming support from his family and friends throughout his mission.

The next challenge he has his eyes on is taking on Commando Training at Lympstone with the Royal Marines.
