The coronavirus outbreak has caused a lot of plans to be revised in the last few months, including those for a Barrow couple's 60th wedding anniversary.

However, Peter and Barbara Turner still managed to make the most of their big day last Thursday, despite not being able to celebrate it with their whole family as originally planned.

Their daughter Amanda lives around the corner from them, but their two sons, Stuart and Andrew, live down south in Sandwich, Kent and Reading, respectively, making it difficult to organise family get-togethers.

There was going to be one such gathering for a long weekend in Blackpool, but Covid-19 sadly forced a rethink, as Barbara was having to shield from the virus amid lockdown.

They were still able to spend time with Amanda on the big day, but one of the reasons for their long relationship is that they still enjoy each other's company.

Stuart Turner said: "They're inseparable, they're a very close couple and have been through ups and downs, like every marriage.

"But I think their secret is they ride storms very well. They support the family, as they're very family-orientated, and even though I live in Kent and my brother lives in Reading we're still a very tight-knit family unit.

"Many years of my father being in the Navy, in a way, was a great leveller for when he came home and worked in Vickers shipyard because it gave them the opportunity to be together on a daily basis."

Now aged 80 and 79, Peter and Barbara kept their humour during lockdown to appreciate the irony of a pandemic affecting their diamond anniversary so many years after a ferry strike delayed their honeymoon in Ireland.

The couple are originally from Preston, which is where they met while Peter served in the Royal Navy, and they showed that shared sense of humour during their wedding, where Barbara said: "With this wallet, I thee wed," during her vows.

They have long since made their home in Barrow, where they hope they will soon be able to welcome their family for a full celebration.
