Sometimes there's good news, and sometimes there's bad news - something The Mail knows all too well.

On page eleven of today's edition, we reveal how more jobs are set to go from Barrow's high street, with longstanding store Reef set to close and Boots set to announce jobs cuts and store closures - a spokesman for Boots said it was too early to say if the measures would affect Barrow.

However, on page two and on the front page, we show how Barrow Market could be in line for a £25m revamp which could transform the town centre and increase footfall for traders.

The iconic Grade II-listed Barrow Town Hall would once again become a community hub - with a public reception area, visitor information and space to host weddings, events and exhibitions. The town square at the front of the building would be transformed into a high quality public space with a play park, gardens and events area for recreation and leisure.

Barrow MP Simon Fell rightly said: “Barrow Market is a hidden gem – this will bring it front and centre of Barrow’s recovery and allow small and new businesses a place to grow and thrive while attracting people back into the centre of town.”

The plans look great, and a redevelopment could be the shot in the arm the high street needs to recover, especially in the aftermath of the coronavirus lockdown of retail.
