Emergency services were called to Walney Promenade on Thursday afternoon following a collision which left a man in his 60s with serious injuries.

Police were called at 5pm to a report of a cyclist having collided with a trailer, which was stationary and parked at the side of the road.

Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an air ambulance attended the scene and the cyclist was taken to hospital in a 'serious condition'.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "Police were called at 5pm to a report of a cyclist having collided with a trailer, which was stationary and parked at the side of the road.

"An air ambulance has attended the scene and the cyclist, a local man in his 60s, has been taken to hospital."

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said the cyclist is in a 'critical condition' after suffering 'very serious head and facial injuries' .

Walney Promenade was shut for a number of hours and cordoned off by police after the accident.

Cllr Des Barlow, North Walney Councillor, said: "Accidents involving cyclists don't happen very often on the promenade.

"I don't know the circumstances but that road is very straight and wide so usually doesn't have many accidents.

"Often cars and trailers do park along there but it is wide enough to pass.

"I hope the cyclist recovers as best as they can from their injuries."

Anyone who witnessed the incident but is yet to come forward is urged to contact police referencing incident 136 of July 9 and calling 101.
