Despite lockdown, we were still able to order a pizza thanks to takeaways staying open, but now our options have increased...

1. Domino’s, Barrow

It had to reduce its menu slightly during the coronavirus pandemic, but the appeal of arguably the most popular takeaway franchise in the country never wavered.

Domino’s two stores on Walney Road and Roose Road not surprisingly remained in demand at a time when we all had to have a lot more ‘quiet nights in.’ Reader Steven Martin believes they have “the best pizzas in Barrow by far.”

2. Santa Marina, Barrow

Staying on the takeaway theme, this Buccleuch Street venue unfortunately did have to close during the outbreak of COVID-19 and the business suffered a tragedy in May when co-owner Gianni Vacca died suddenly aged 57.

He and his brother Roberto established Santa Marina in 2002, with their upbringing in Sardinia inspiring the menu of one the town’s top takeaways.

3. Bici Cafe, Ulverston

Customers aren’t able to enjoy a sit-down meal at Bici Cafe, based at The Gill, just yet as they have chosen not to reopen as they were due to safety concerns.

However, their popular takeaway service is still available for people to walk in and collect their wood-fired pizzas, for which 40p from every one sold has been going to St Mary’s Hospice and Ulverston Foodbank.

4. Kitchen Wizard, Dalton

A real favourite of Dalton resident Ashleigh Fell, (“by far the best for pizza”), Kitchen Wizard on Tudor Square runs pizza nights every Saturday, with customers able to pre-order before collecting their meal in a designated slot.

They were so popular during lockdown that they had to stop taking orders in order to catch up with demand.

5. Ski Bar, Haverigg

This cosy venue overlooks the watersports lagoon at the Port Haverigg Marina Village and it’s the first on our list where customers can sit down for a pizza once again.

The Ski Bar was fully booked on its first night back last Saturday and provides possibly the best view of any of the places listed here.

6. Pizzarella, Walney

Their Hawaiian pizzas come recommended by reader Bernadatte Horan. Pizzarella, based on the Promenade, has long been one of the most popular takeaways in the Furness area and its ‘munch boxes’ give customers great value for money.

7. Sizzle Inn, Ulverston

This takeaway on Union Street has been praised by Sally-Ann Hunter for always having “a good service and quick, friendly delivery. Their pizzas are the pick of a wide-ranging menu and collections have recently resumed.

8. Mario House, Barrow

Barrovians were thrilled to see this place on Dalton Road reopen last weekend, although they were able to continue to sample their ample menu of pizzas and pasta during lockdown via takeaway.
