RESIDENTS have raised concerns about speeding drivers travelling through a town centre.

Community figures have called for action to stop boy racers travelling at high speed through cramped streets in Dalton.

Calls have been made to introduce digital speed awareness - and for drivers to temper their speed.

Craig Fox, the deputy mayor of Dalton, said: “Speeding has been an issue in the town for a long time.

“At the town council we’ve had the speed gun training but we don’t have the personnel to be out on the streets.

“We want to work with Highways and the police.

“We would ask drivers to be aware of things and keep an eye on the speed limit.”

Cllr Fox said Ulverston Road was one of the worst areas for speeding.

The speed limit through the centre of Dalton is 20mph.

But many residents say drivers passing through the town often do not pay attention to speed restrictions.

Jacqui Chisman, the landlady of the Golden Ball pub in Dalton’s Tudor Square, said she had seen and heard drivers careering through the town

“At all times of the day drivers come speeding past down Ulverston Road,” she said.”

Dalton councillor Steve Nott said he also thought speed was an issue in the town.

“In some areas I see people doing well in excess of 40mph,” he said.

As well as speed monitoring, calls have been made previously to pedestrianise a section of Dalton town centre for the safety of pedestrians, namely Market Street between the Co-op and the Station Road junction.

Cllr Ben Shirley said previously that the 20mph limit had ‘little effect’ on drivers.
