ONE in six people were ‘food insecure’ last month, according to Extinction Rebellion Furness ahead of its charitable Two Tin Tuesday drive.

The collection of food and sanitary products returns to Barrow today.

Boxes are being left throughout the town for people to drop off donations. The locations can found on the website xrfurness.uk or on XR Furness' Facebook page.

A spokesman for the group said: “Government data reveals that nearly one in six people reported being food insecure in May.

"Hubs in Barrow are still assisting hundreds of families each week.

"Two Tin Tuesday is just one of the ways our community has rallied to meet the challenges from Covid-19.

"Our government has a unique opportunity now to assess the shortcomings from this crisis and to put climate resilience and mitigation at the heart of its Covid recovery plan.

"This is only a taste of what we can expect from a climate emergency.”

Donations collected will be distributed by Barrow Island and Walney hubs.

To date, XR Furness says it has collected more than 4,000 kg of food, toiletries and cleaning products - the food equating to more than 10,000 meals.
