A SUPERMARKET has revealed two Furness towns are among locations it wants to open stores.

Barrow and Ulverston were named among the possible sites Lidl is looking to open new branches in.

The German-owned retailer has rapidly expanded its number of branches in recent years, and the company shows no signs of slowing down in the coming months and years.

According to details published on Lidl’s website, bosses at the supermarket say they are looking to ‘double their portfolio’, with for freehold, leasehold or long leasehold opportunities sought in a large number of places nationwide.

Lidl named 'Barrow North' and 'Barrow South' as possible locations to open in.

The company's ideal site has been described as either in town or out of town, with a main road frontage, easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow.

The company also has an option to convert existing buildings into a Lidl store.

The supermarket chain formerly had a presence in Barrow in what is now Farmfoods in Walney Road.

Mail readers on Facebook welcomed a potential return of the supermarket and said where they would like to see a Lidl open up.

Andrea Pitts suggested: "The old Savers in Dalton Road, M&S and reopen it back upstairs or the old Aldi store."

Karen Nott said: "In Ulverston it could go on the old brewery where they were going to put a supermarket. I would have liked this instead of Aldi."

Les Mcleese said: "The old Aldi or M&S."

Barrow's M&S in Dalton Road was due to close this year. The Aldi in Hindpool Retail Park closed last year. The nearest Lidl store is in Morecambe.

It’s worth pointing out that each of the locations below are not confirmed, but they do represent a rough idea of where the chain is hoping to expand across the country.
