THE iconic Clock Tower at at Barrow Town Hall is to turn purple tonight (Friday, June 5) in memory of George Floyd and in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and anti-racism protests around the world.
It will keep its purple colour throughout the weekend along with other public buildings across the UK.
A number of groups across south Cumbria have produced displays of solidarity and support for the racial justice and civil rights protestors in the US this week.
Politicians in the area - like Westmorland and Lonsdale MP, Tim Farron - have also made interventions on the issue.
Cllr Ann Thomson, Barrow Borough Council leader, said: “We have been shocked at the tragic recent events in the United States and send our condolences, as a community, to the family and friends of George Floyd.
“Racism, in any form, is completely unacceptable. It is a scourge upon society and the very opposite of all we stand for here in Barrow.
“Our community is welcoming and celebrates diversity. There is no place here for anything other than respect, equality and kindness for all.
