CUMBRIA firefighters have moved to warn the public after they were called out to a high volume of grass fires and fires in the open.

Carlisle West Fire Station says crews from across the county have been dealing with the blazes, including helping to tackle the Hatfield Moors fire near Doncaster, which has been burning since May 17.

Carlisle West and East crews were called to various fires on Friday night.

Firefighters offered the following tips:

  • Avoid using open fires in the countryside;
  • Do not leave bottles or glass in woodlands - sunlight shining through glass can cause fire;
  • Keep young children and ball games away from barbecues;
  • Extinguish cigarettes and other smoking materials properly;
  • Only use barbecues in suitable and safe areas and never leave them unattended;
  • Never throw cigarette ends out of car windows - they can ruin fields of crops;
  • Ensure your barbecue is fully extinguished and cold before disposing of contents.
