MAIL readers had a lot to say about a Barrow head teacher's announcement that only the children of key workers will be able to return to his when it reopens, granted the government presses ahead with its plan to begin doing so at the beginning of June.

Karen Mahaffy: Children must only go back when schools and parents feel confident they can mitigate risk as much as possible keeping kids and staff as safe as possible but whatever happens consideration must be given to primary schools year 6's and their transition to senior school, with their classmates going to different schools, loss of end of school rites of passage and anxiety about the transition to seniors, schools must think about how they support these children.

Christina Howker-Fullard: I've full sympathy. Heads and teachers are just trying to do what's best and keep staff, pupils and their families safe.

Rachel McGovern: Proud my children are, or have been part of this school.

Carol Stitt: Is there really much point sending them back on June 15? For the sake of five weeks to break up...

Paul Griffiths: Children can go to school but not their friends and families homes. Children can social distance with 14 other pupils and teachers in a classroom but after school no more than 1 other which must be outside. Children “don’t really catch or pass it on” yet the number of Covid related Kawasaki cases is rising worldwide. Why not just wait till September and see how things are by then?

Steven Fletcher: If accurate, the infection survey pilot shows that age is not a factor in being infected by the virus. As the ONS report states, "There is no evidence suggesting age has an impact on the likelihood of an individual having COVID-19". I don't have the answer to this problem. However, it seems likely as people of any age gather together that transmission will happen.

Ste Tyson: The right decision.

Gill Park Well done.
