HUNDREDS of key workers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving up their time and risking their own lives have been thanked by the entire Barrow community.

What started out as a Barrow hair and beauty salon’s online competition quickly escalated into a huge show of support for all key workers.

The salon’s owner, Kristy Linton, asked customers to nominate a friend or relative on the front-line to win a pamper prize.

Within 24 hours the post had attracted more than 3,500 nominations as messages of thanks poured in for everyone from NHS workers to cleaners, retail workers, GPs, police officers, butchers, bus drivers and teachers.

Many nominations revealed the extent to which key workers had made the ultimate sacrifice.

Eve-Rowan Moss nominated Harriet Thomas who works in the NHS.

“She tested positive for COVID-19 yet still carries on being an amazing mum at home to Ted,” she said.

Zoe Brand said: “Our brave mum Beth Brand has put herself at risk every day working in intensive care at FGH and has now tested positive for the virus.”

Thomas Lowes nominated ‘amazing nurse’ Hayley Sainty ‘who contracted COVID-19 from looking after patients in FGH’.

Other nominations highlighted the vast number of people who continue to put their own health at risk to help others.

Many were making personal sacrifices because their jobs mean they are unable to see close family.

Andrea Jane Nicholls said: “Dawn Brown has worked tirelessly to ensure the communities are provided with fresh meat delivered to their door, working long hours to ensure everyone is provided for whilst sacrificing seeing her grandson. Key workers come in all forms.”

Dawn Marsland said: “My mum Janet Marsland, in her 60s, is a domestic cleaner, currently cleaning the rooms of patients with COVID-19.”

Melanie While said: “Danielle Reid is a domestic assistant at Furness General Hospital who is currently working nearly every day or night to keep the wards clean and putting her own family at risk every time.”

Michelle Louise Holden nominated Danielle Vivienne who has ‘not only been redeployed to the front-line but has been sent to Carlisle hospital away from her family'.

Zest owner Miss Linton said she had been blown away by the response to the competition.

“The post has turned into a place for people to be kind and tell the world how proud they were of each other,” the mum-of-one said.

“It was just supposed to be a little bit of something we could give back to others but it turned out to be massive.

People are being so nice to each other and tagging people that have helped them.

“It was just so lovely to read, we were all so emotional, and so we’ve added more prizes and we’re giving 20 per cent off to everyone.”
