A DECISION has been made on plans to convert part of health centre into a home.

A planning application was submitted to Barrow Borough Council's planning department to convert a redundant building, called Walney Cottage, behind Burnett Edgar surgery in Central Drive on Walney.

The plans revealed the building in question has not been used since 2015.

The proposals do not affect the health centre.

It was decided to grant outline planning permission, with all matters reserved, to convert the redundant medical facility associated with the Burnett Edgar Centre to a habitable dwelling.

The decision followed a period of public consultation undertaken by the council.

Doctors from the surgery were among three applicants who recently saw plans for an Islamic community centre in Dalton approved.

Dr Farhan Amin and Dr Ghulam Jeelani, along with Dr Anas Olabi, wanted to establish a prayer hall and centre for the community at Ulverston Road.

They are all from the charity, South Lakes Islamic Centre, which wants to ‘provide a public community space, which will have the aim of providing a platform for community integration’.

Council planners have also recently approved proposals to turn a property in Barrow’s Church Street into an eight-bed house of multiple occupancy.

Plans have been submitted for a housing development comprising three large detached houses near St Paul’s Church in Abbey Road.

The site was once occupied by a large residential property knowns as Armadale.

The land is currently unused and is heavily wooded, according to the proposals that have been submitted.
