A BARROW bakery known for its hugely popular pies has scored a one out of five in its latest food hygiene inspection.

Green’s Bakery in Jarrow Street was rated as one in its recent inspection led by Environmental Health officers.

The inspection, which was unannounced, took place on February 19.

The bakery previously held a three food hygiene score after it was inspected in 2018.

Green's was taken over by David and Carol McArthur in 1990 and has been a popular haunt for pie-lovers for more than 30 years.

Green’s pies have also attracted the attention of celebrity chefs, the Hairy Bikers, and have been placed top of the tree in a nationwide search for “piefection”.

Wigan-born writer, Martin Tarbuck, journeyed across the UK in search the perfect pie, singling out Green’s meat and potato offering as the number one pie and heralding Barrow as the new Pie Capital of Britain in 2015.

Selling hundreds of pies a day, Green’s is one of the most popular pie shops in town, attracting people from across the country and globe.

The Mail were unable to reach Green’s Bakery for a comment regarding their latest food hygiene inspection due to the coronavirus crisis forcing non-essential shops to close.

Councillor Tony Callister, Barrow Borough Council spokesperson for licensing and public protection, said:”Green’s Bakery in Barrow was inspected on February 19.

“The inspection was unannounced and the business scored a one rating on this occasion.

“The team are always keen to work with businesses across the borough to help them identify how they can improve their existing rating so it is as high as possible for the future.”
