IT was a lunch to remember at this popular Ulverston café as customers flocked in to receive their takeaway food around noon.

I visited the Poppies Café and Bistro before the government advice of avoiding restaurants and bars came into play at the end of last week and I am glad I managed to experience this place before it had to stop service in-house.

I decided to sit in when a visit to Ulverston made me peckish and I opted for a sandwich of my own creation, as you get to choose three fillings from an array of options.

I went with chicken, bacon, and lettuce, which I admit is slightly unadventurous but you can never go wrong with a classic.

With my drink option I decided to roll back the years and get a hot chocolate.

I refused the cream and marshmallows though which I now regret as it would have made for a much more aesthetically pleasing photograph.

During my short wait for food, I noticed on the menu that the Union Street-based cafe offers customers hot drinks, breakfast and lunch which is made in-house fresh.

The cafe also offers bistro services on Friday and Saturday evenings as well.

The menu caters for all and offers an affordable price with great quality.

When the food came I was amazed by the presentation as you tend not to expect too much when it comes to a sandwich.

But the plate was filled with two big slices accompanied by salad and coleslaw, with honey mustard delicately lined around the dish.

The taste was brilliant and it is hard to do a sandwich well, but they managed it.

The overall price of my meal was £9 which is pretty good considering the portion size and the friendly service.

Manager and chef Steve Hartley is really passionate about the food industry and has been working in the business since he started at the age of 14, when he worked as a kitchen assistant at Lakeside Hotel. The 35-year-old jumped at the chance of running his own place to fulfil a long-term ambition. The business has also won The Mail’s ‘Trader of the Week’ award and it is clear now why.

Pros: A real relaxed homely feel to it.
