A FIRST single released this month by band Boxes is already attracting praise.

And the country rock band, which includes singer David Miller and bass player Tom Adams who grew up together in Ulverston, is releasing a full EP at the end of this month.

The single is called Electric Lights and was released on March 17, with the EP, called Why Don’t You Listen, due out on March 31.

Tom, who was brought up in Croftlands in Ulverston where his parents live, said: “We have obviously had gigs cancelled so it is difficult at this moment.

“But the response to the single has been great, a fantastic response. As of yesterday we were on 1,500 streams on Spotify, so we have had great support. It really meant a lot to us, it wasn’t what we were expecting.

“It is such a good feeling to have the music out. There is a lot of hard work goes into it. We really want to make the most of it.”

Members of the band have been busy on social media, and singer David has even live streamed some acoustic songs for fans.

They had been due to play three gigs in Ulverston between April and June, but some or all of those gigs will now be postponed.

Tom attended Ulverston Victoria High School before studying electronic engineering at Huddersfield University. He now lives in Manchester, and works as a software engineer in Oldham.

“I have played bass for years now, but I used to play drums at high school,” he said.

“I picked up the bass maybe when I was 18. It was only when I moved back to Ulverston full time after uni that I joined a band with David Miller. When I moved to Manchester David said he was looking for a bass player.”

The band is David Miller, who sings and plays rhythm guitar, Tom on bass lead guitarist Josh Smith and drummer James Saunders.

David writes all the songs for the band. He works at Media City in Salford, where he is involved in online sports streaming.

When it comes to songwriting, David said: “For inspiration I use past history, things that you have learned about. With country and Americana there always has to be a story so if you can put it into words you are onto a winner. Sometimes the lyrics come first, sometimes the melody, it just happens for me.”
