All scheduled flights to London Southend and Belfast City from Carlisle airport will be suspended from Friday.

Airport owner Stobart Group said the flights have been suspended until further notice.

Last week, the route to Dublin was suspended by operator Loganair in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Loganair customers will be informed by email today and fares will be refunded automatically, a statement said.

Simon Williamson, managing director of Carlisle Lake District Airport, said: “The unprecedented situation that we are all facing is having a major impact, with the Government advising against all unnecessary travel.

"This decision reflects that important advice. Our priority must continue to be the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, guests and the local community.

“We also want to take this opportunity to thank all our employees for their hard work during recent weeks, from implementing action plans to working to ensure the safety of all passengers and colleagues.

"The world as a whole is experiencing exceptional challenges right now and we appreciate your support and understanding.”

Loganair has strongly advised that affected customers do not call its call centre as it is experiencing very high volumes of calls.

Loganair has updated its website with all relevant information and those affected are advised to visit www.loganair.co.uk instead.

Last week, Loganair said the suspension of the Dublin route was among wider measures across the UK in reaction to the impact of coronavirus.

It cut more than 50 per cent of its flights and Jonathan Hinkles, chief executive of Loganair, said at the time that forward bookings had fallen by around 75 per cent.
