THE Mail's readers have given their view on Barrow's bid to become a new campus for the University of Cumbria.

This was highlighted as another first under Barrow's recently elected MP Simon Fell.

Marilyn Marshall Well done Simon. As University Partnership Tutor for the University of Cumbria (Institute of Education) and with responsibility for overseeing trainee teachers in the Barrow and Dalton area this would be a wonderful idea for the area.

Shaun Blezard It would be only right for Mr Fell to acknowledge the work that Barrow Borough Council has put into the idea of a university campus locally. As a councillor I must say it is a little rude of him to attend one meeting and start claiming these ideas as his own.

Matt Bibby A Barrow Borough council idea that has been in the offing long before our new MP was voted in.

John Eccles Do it we need it here. I studied at University through Furness College and it meant I did not have to move away.

Danielle Chappell Aspinwall It would be! To travel to Cumbria university from Dalton in the same county would take more than double the time than travel time to UCLAN in Preston. Would also bring in additional students to fill some of the empty houses needed renting and spend money in the local economy, maybe certain skills gap missed locally new students could fill those gaps and fall in love with the Furness and want to stay and help build a connected stronger community of Furness. Obviously four years of living here I am in love with the people and the place. I am an adopted Daltonian and passionate of great things to enhance our beautiful assets we have on our doorstep.

Christina Howker-Fullard You’ve already got to fork out thousands in tuition fees. If you add rent and living expenses onto that it can be more than some people can afford or are willing to go into debt for.
